Building Stakeholders' Confidence in the Outcome of

the 2008 Elections

Ghana's transition to multiparty democracy has since 1992 been acclaimed the world over as one of the most successful transitions to democracy in the developing world. Four successive elections have been held and have largely been seen to reflect the will of the voters. One good reason for this success has been attributed to the independence and outstanding performance of the Electoral Commission. In 2007, the FES cooperated with the Commission to hold Inter-Party Advisory Committee meetings to discuss the issue of public funding of political parties which resulted in a memorandum to the President.
In 2008, the FES and the Electoral Commission again agreed to organise Inter-Party Advisory Committee meetings, this time in all the regions of Ghana. The reason was to educate regional executives of all the functional political parties and the media on electoral rules and regulations and to assure them of adequate preparations the Commission has made to organise successful elections come December 2008. These meetings have helped to increase trust and confidence among political parties and the Commission and have also dispelled notions that government can manipulate the electoral process. The Commission emphasised the fact that it is independent and would not succumb to any pressure from any quarters. Parties and the media also became aware of the basic electoral rules and regulations and how to conduct themselves during the elections.
