As part of the pre-events to mark the Twelfth Quadrennial Conference of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XII) that took place in Accra, the FES in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) organised a one-day workshop on development strategies for Africa. The target group was made up of economists from Africa, civil society organisations, development practitioners and academics. The objectives of the activity were
1.To bring together African economists to discuss various programmes put in place with the aim of improving Africa's development
2.Share reasons why massive economic development is still eluding
3.Make recommendations that would lead to a change in the current situation in international development particularly on the African continent.
The activity highlighted the development challenges of Africa. During the discussions and the presentations, the question of why some African economies on paper seemed to be doing well but this was yet to translate into the well-being of the citizenry. Some participants were of the view that given the peculiarity of African countries, the indicators used by the West may not be appropriate for African countries. After the deliberations, there was a communiqué
that was issued to be circulated amongst the delegates attending the UNCTAD XII conference. The communiqué
called for a just world economic order and the need for more foreign direct investment to Africa. |
