For women, it is not easy to choose a career as a politician in Ghana. They are discouraged from contesting national executive positions in their parties - except for the "Women Organiser " and have to fight harder than their male counterparts to run for political offices like a Member of Parliament. The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung together with its partners Abantu for Development and Women in Broadcasting has, therefore, developed a training programme exclusively for politically active women to support them in their struggle.
The training is a seven-month modular programme which is supposed to strengthen the skills and capacities of the female politicians and also to build their self-confidence and self-esteem to overcome the challenges of male dominated politics. The modules included Negotiation Skills, Leadership Skills, Presentation Skills, Media Skills, Fundamentals of the Democratic System in Ghana, Gender and Development and Women and the Economy.
The women selected for the programme are members of seven political parties in Ghana such as NDC, NPP, GCPP, CPP, PNC, EGLE and DFP. They are very active in their respective parties but are struggling to progress. The training seeks to provide them with additional skills for them to be well equipped for the upcoming challenges.
