A majority of the Ghanaian population is considered youth (below the age of 35). However, their voice on governance and political issues is almost always not heard. Their capacities are not built and very few of them occupy influential positions. As a result, youth needs or concerns go unnoticed. The YLTP was designed to contribute to the development of the capacities of the youth to help them become a part of the governance process. Such early involvement in politics should help the future leaders to develop the democratic leadership skills which they would put to use in their political careers.
This year's YLTP, geared towards building the capacity of young leaders for Ghana, commenced on the 8th - 9th March, 2008, with participants drawn from the Ghana Trades Union Congress, (GTUC), the four political parties with representation in parliament (NPP, NDC, PNC & CPP) , Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students, National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Corporate Social Responsibility Movement (CSRM), National Youth Council and of course our partner organisation for this training programme, Youth Network for Human Rights and Democracy (you-net). This year's training programme includes the following modules:
Leadership Skills, Presentation & Visualisation Skills, Moderation & Facilitation Skills, Fundamentals of the Ghanaian Democratic System, Negotiation Skills, International Development and the African Crises, Local Government and Decentralisation in Ghana and Fundamentals of the Ghanaian Economy.
There will also be a module that will create the awareness of the need to be gender sensitive in all respects of politics.
The training is expected to end in September 2008, and it is our hope that more alumni of this training will make an impact on the political terrain as a few budding ones have been noticed.
