After having covered five regions of Ghana, interactions between Members of Parliament including the leadership and Speaker and the electorate took place in Koforidua and Ho in January 2008 and Cape Coast and Western Regions in April 2008. The electorate showed a lot of interest in the programme and asked MPs questions concerning the work of Parliament. It was however clear from the questions that the electorate were yet to appreciate the work of Parliament. Issues that came up during the interaction were on
1.International Trade issues particularly the Economic Partnership Agreements
2.Need for MPs to put the nation first in their work
3.Unhealthy relationship between MPs and District Chief Executives
4.Ghana's foreign policy
5.MPs not keeping their campaign promises particularly as agents of development.
Participants called on government to promote local industries and also make sure that it maximised the benefits of globalisation. MPs and DCEs were entreated to remember that they must put Ghana first in their work.
Participants showed a lot of interest in the governance process of the country. It also was an opportunity for parliament to be brought the electorate. |
