Regional Integration

Various activities are directed at promoting regional integration in West Africa. Joint workshops for trade union leaders from West African Countries are organized quite regularly. Topically, special emphasis has been placed on the negotiations towards Economic Partnership Agreements between ECOWAS countries and the EU on the one hand and the strengthening of a Sub-regional Security Architecture und ECOWAS on the other hand.

Whilst both our sub-regional programmes are coordinated by our two sub-regional FES-offices in Benin and Nigeria respectively, FES Ghana plays host to a great number of international and sub-regional workshops and conferences. In addition, we promote dialogue pertaining to regional integration through various activities with our national partners in different fields of work.

Projects (recent highlights):

Workshops for Members of the Parliamentary Committees on Tourism, Trade and Industry and Foreign Affairs on multilateral trade issues or on "Ghana's Quest for Regional Integration and Security" may serve as some examples of our programmes. You find these programmes described in more detail as well as the first sub-regional workshop for Leaderships of West African Parliamentary Committees on Multilateral Trade Issues under Parliamentary Cooperation .

West African Poultry Farmers Association.

West African poultry farmers see their economic future as being under threat through the reduction of import duties, customs and tariffs and what they perceive as dumping of frozen chicken parts from international sources and the European Union in particular. In the run up to the WTO-ministerial meeting in Hong Kong, and with a view on the soon to be concluded negotiations on the establishment of Economic Partnership Agreements between ECOWAS-countries and the European Union within the framework of the Cotonou Agreement, a first time ever meeting of West African Poultry Farmer Associations was hosted in Accra from November 21 st - 23 rd, 2005. Despite some differences in their particular economic interests, participants managed to agree on a number of issues, concerns and demands to be tabled before the concerned authorities and negotiators.
